Trooper Joseph J. Gallagher, shield 2466, was born on April 19, 1982 in Buffalo NY. He graduated in 2000 from Bishop Timon-St Jude High School in his hometown of Buffalo. In 2004 he graduated from SUNY Maritime in Bronx, NY with a degree in engineering, at which time he also served in the US Coast Guard Reserves and later entered active duty upon graduation.
Tpr. Gallagher graduated from the NYSP Academy in February 2015 and was initially assigned to Troop F. Wanting to be closer to family on Long Island he transferred to Troop T and slowly worked his way to Troop L.
On December 18, 2017 Tpr. Gallagher was struck by a distracted driver while assisting a disabled motorist on the Sagtikos State Parkway ramp in Brentwood, NY. He remained in an extended care facility until he succumbed to his injuries on March 26, 2021, leaving behind a wife and two small children.
