On January 19, 1936, Trooper Clark L. Lewis died instantly when his 1933 Chevrolet open touring car went off Route 27 during a blizzard and overturned near the village of Montauk. Trooper Lewis was assigned to the Montauk Point Barracks and was returning to the barracks after checking the security of Hither Hills State Park. Trooper Lewis was an 11-year veteran of the State Police and served in Troops D, B and Troop G, where he was a member of the famed Rough Riders. He was then assigned to the Troop K Parkway Detail and was with the detail when it was reclassified as Troop L. Trooper Lewis was a veteran of the New York National Guard and the U.S Navy.
