On January 6, 2026, Sgt. Michael L. Piro, shield 2439, passed away from an illness resulting from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. His death is a solemn reminder of the lasting toll borne by those who responded selflessly in the aftermath of that tragic day.
Sergeant Piro retired from the New York State Police on March 26, 2015 after 29 years of dedicated service. He was last assigned to Troop L – SP Riverside.
